Like most people, cornhole started out as a backyard game among friends. Randomly, in the fall of 2021, I received a text from a friend that I hadn’t had much contact with over the past couple of years asking if I wanted to join an indoor cornhole league. I had never heard of such a thing. And as irony would have it, I was looking for an opportunity to hang out with him anyway. A “social” cornhole league was this opportunity.
Over the next 6 months, we had some great conversations about life, love, kids, family, work, and everything in between. At the time, I thought I was there for him. As it turned out, I needed those conversations in my life. The cornhole league provided an outlet for me and introduced me to some of the most amazing people. Cornhole helped me to reprioritize my life and quickly turned into a passion. Thursday nights became a place of solitude and happiness that I looked forward to every week.
That following summer I decided to make a few cornhole boards out of my garage for friends. When asked about making cornhole bags, I had to decline because I knew nothing about making bags. The only thing I did know was that I wasn’t going to put my name on something that wasn’t of the highest quality and durability. This is where curiosity started getting the best of me, and where it all began. In the fall of 2022, I told my wife that I think I figured out how to make bags and floated the idea of creating a company that makes cornhole bags. Without hesitation, my wife and kids provided limitless support.
My wife and I have 4 wonderful daughters and live a pretty simple life. We balance our time working full-time jobs and prioritizing time with family and friends. Our two youngest daughters keep us on the go while our two oldest daughters and son in laws are living their best lives nearby with two awesome grandchildren. Making cornhole bags has proven to be a complete family effort and a great way to spend more time together.
I am most often asked about the origin of the name, Bolo Cornhole. The day that we told the family that we decided to start a company, I challenged them to come up with a name. The next day, my son in law sent me a text and suggested the name Bolo. When I asked him about it, he simply said that it sounded cool or 'be on the lookout'. I agreed but wasn't sure what to do with it. I then started down this rabbit hole of looking up the meaning of my friends’ last names. The man who originally asked me to play with him has a last name that means ‘knife’ in another language. When I looked up knife, I saw the word bolo. I then looked up ‘bolo’ and learned a bolo is a knife with origins in the Phillipeans. This was the first of two connections that I was looking for in a name. It linked the importance of the role my friends have in my life. I then looked up, ‘be on the lookout’. This phrase represents someone who is watching over you and offers support. This definition encompassed the support I have in my family. It was perfect to describe the nature of my wife, who has always had my back, has always been my rock, and who has always supported me. Thus, Bolo Cornhole was born.
